Why It's Worth Doing Now

Camcorder tapes don't last forever.

Through the 1980s, 90s and 2000s, families recorded life on whatever camcorder format was current at the time — Betamax, VHS-C, Video 8, Hi8, Digital 8, MiniDV and, briefly, MicroMV. Each format had its own tapes, and most households ended up with a mixed box of several.

All of these tapes degrade with time and with every playback. Magnetic tape sheds particles, colours fade, and older analogue formats in particular are prone to picture and sound quality loss the longer they sit unplayed. The equipment that plays these formats is also becoming harder to find and maintain, which is part of why professional transfer matters more each year, not less.

We're based in the South West and regularly work with customers across Somerset and Wiltshire, and accept tapes by post from anywhere in the UK.

Inspected, cleaned & repaired

  • Hand inspection firstEvery tape is checked by hand before transfer, regardless of format or age.
  • Cleaning & repair when neededTapes that need cleaning or repair — from light dust to more significant damage — are attended to before digitising. Charges for this work reflect the time involved and scale with the amount of cleaning or repair needed; we'll always send you the cost and get your go-ahead before that work begins.
  • The right deck for every formatWe keep working, serviced decks for each consumer tape format we accept — not a one-size-fits-all converter box.
  • Quality checked twiceFootage is reviewed after transfer, and re-run on different hardware if anything isn't right.
Formats We Convert

Seven formats, one straightforward process.

Not sure what you have? Send us a photo of the tape and we'll identify it for you.

1980s–90s

Betamax

Sony's early home video format, common in the late 1970s and 1980s before VHS became dominant.

1980s–90s

VHS-C

A compact version of VHS designed for camcorders, played back using an adapter in a standard VHS deck.

Late 1980s–90s

Video 8

A compact camcorder tape format, popular for its smaller cassette size compared to full VHS.

1990s

Hi8

An improved, higher-resolution version of Video 8, widely used in home camcorders through the 90s.

Late 1990s

Digital 8

Sony's digital successor to Hi8, recording a digital signal onto the same style of cassette.

1990s–2000s

MiniDV

The most common digital camcorder format of the 2000s, known for sharp, reliable picture quality.

Early 2000s

MicroMV

A short-lived, ultra-compact Sony format — increasingly hard to find working playback equipment for.

Questions

Consumer tape transfer frequently asked questions.

Which consumer tape formats can you transfer?+
We transfer Betamax, VHS-C, Video 8, Hi8, Digital 8, MiniDV and MicroMV tapes to DVD, USB flash drive or cloud storage. If your format isn't listed, get in touch as we handle most legacy formats.
Do you cover Somerset and Wiltshire?+
Yes, we regularly work with customers across Somerset and Wiltshire, and accept tapes by post from anywhere in the UK.
How much does consumer tape transfer cost?+
Consumer tape transfer starts from £15.00 + VAT per tape. Use the order form for an instant indicative quote.
Can you transfer old or damaged camcorder tapes?+
In most cases, yes. Every tape is inspected by hand, and cleaned or repaired where needed. There is an additional charge for cleaning and repair, which reflects the time involved and can vary considerably between a light clean and more extensive repair work. We always confirm the cost with you and get your approval before carrying out any of that work. If your tape squeals, feels tacky or smells musty, see our guide to sticky shed syndrome.
What file format will my digital files be in?+
By default we deliver H.264 (MP4) files, which play on virtually any device. H.265/HEVC and other formats are available on request via the order form.
